Specifics of pregnancy management after IVF
Pregnancy management after IVF has some specifics. They are connected with a high risk of termination of pregnancy in the first weeks after embryo transfer and the need for additional hormonal support
The main goals of pregnancy management are:
- prevention of infectious diseases of the pelvic organs
- early diagnosis of multiple pregnancies
- minimizing the risk of spontaneous abortion
- early detection of fetal abnormalities
After IVF, a woman is observed not only by a gynecologist. Depending on the indications, consultations of other narrow specialists are appointed: cardiologist, endocrinologist, neurologist, etc.
IVF pregnancy management in trimesters
Scheduled check-ups must be performed every trimester. The number of examinations is selected individually and according to the duration of pregnancy.
During the entire pregnancy, a general and biochemical blood test, a general urine test, and a coagulogram are monitored.
The complex of examinations in the first trimester includes determining the level of hCG in dynamics, ultrasound of the pelvic organs. In the clinic doctors draw up a list of laboratory and instrumental tests that require monitoring after IVF.
In the second trimester, an additional AFP analysis is carried out. Alpha-fetoprotein is actively involved in fetal development. Its level should correspond to the age of the embryo from the moment of fertilization.
Cardiotocography can be performed in the third trimester of pregnancy. CTG determines the fetal heart rate, the activity of its movements. It also diagnoses uterine contractions and the child’s reaction to these contractions.
